Regent University: School History
Regent University was founded in 1978 with the mission of providing “Christian Leadership to Change the World.” Today, the university offers more than 110 programs online and on-campus, ranging from associate’s degrees to doctoral programs.
Located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Regent University is just minutes from the oceanfront. The campus spans over 100 acres and includes state-of-the-art facilities like the Library & Technology Center and the Regent Commons Plaza.
Regent University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, educational specialist, and doctoral degrees.
The school history of Regent University began in 1977 when a group of concerned individuals came together with a shared vision of creating a world-class Christian university. In 1978, the Board of Trustees was formed, and Dr. Maitland Cushing Miley was named as the founding president. The university opened its doors in September 1979 with an inaugural class of 135 students.

Most students finance their education through a combination of grants, loans, and personal funds. At Regent University, we understand the financial investment you are making in your future. Our team is committed to helping you every step of the way—from exploring payment options to securing scholarships and other forms of aid.
student aid comes in many forms, including grants, loans, and work-study jobs. To be eligible for aid, you must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form.
Grants are awarded based on financial need and do not have to be repaid. The federal government awards Pell Grants to undergraduate students who haven’t earned a bachelor’s or professional degree. Other types of grants include FSEOG (Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant), TEACH (Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education), and Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants.
Loans must be repaid with interest. The federal government offers several types of loans, including Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, PLUS Loans, and Perkins Loans. You may also borrow from a private lender such as a bank or credit union.
If you are unable to find work to help pay for college, you may be eligible for a Federal Work-Study job. These jobs are usually part-time and located on campus or in nearby off-campus settings such as hospitals, schools, libraries, or nonprofit organizations
